We manufacture "Island Delight" brand Jamaican patties. Jamaican patties are a savoury pastry with a fish or meat filling, they developed from the Cornish pasty, which was taken with sailors when the trade routes to the West Indies developed in the 17th century.

We are a small business with a friendly family-like atmosphere. We are a great company because we are all passionate about Caribbean food and at Cleone Foods we love to share that passion with our customers.

Job role: Project Management

Describe what you do in your job. What is a typical day like?

As a project manager, I have several areas of responsibility within the business. The project side is dealing with special projects (such as purchasing equipment and services), exhibitions (Birmingham Caribbean Festival and Notting Hill Carnival) and external events. The managing side of my role is dealing with health and safety, IT administration (managing the network) and I am strongly involved in facilities and maintenance.

Was this your first job? What other jobs or work experience have you had?

No this was not my first job. I have always been very practical and like to use my skills to get involved. I have worked in various industries but I have mainly worked in the Building industry (10 years or so). I came to Cleone Foods as a Delivery Driver but my skills were recognised and I eventually moved into other departments.

What process did you have to follow to get your job?

I applied through the Job Centre and came for an interview for a Delivery Driver position. As I was successful, I started straight away.

What is great about your job? What part of your job do you enjoy the most?

Every day is different! Some days can be great but other days can be challenging. I mostly enjoy meeting new people, travelling to new places and dealing with major challenges. I also enjoy going to a range of different festivals including Glastonbury. Everybody who works here are dedicated to making Island Delight a success. We all work together as a team to make this happen.

What training do you get at work to help you do your job role?

I have on the job training which means I learn as I work. I have also taken training and received qualifications in Health and Safety (because I work in the Food Industry) and various Microsoft Applications. For this role I have taken training in Leadership and Management through the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM).

What skills are required to do your job?

In this role you will need excellent organisation, planning and time management skills to be able to do your job well. You must have good communication and negotiation skills as you will work with others inside and outside the business. If you are working within a particular industry, it is an advantage if you have some knowledge about this industry. Good IT skills are also required for this role as you might have to write reports and assessments.
